More groups from the Northern states have dissociated themselves from calls by some protesters in the region who are agitating for a military takeover of governance in the country.

Arewa PUNCH’s investigations reveal the groups’ insistence that there was no need for anybody, group or persons to truncate the country’s democracy.

The chairman of the National Unity Forum for Peace, Abbas Dattijo, while lambasting proponents of a military takeover of government, told Arewa PUNCH that those calling for a change of the democratically elected government did not speak for the region.

Dattijo stated, “The people of our region are not in any way in support of regime change of constitutionally installed government and can never support calls for the Russian government to intervene in the situation happening in the country.”

Also speaking, the Grand Alliance of Coalition of Northern Youths Movement also disagreed with those calling for a regime change due to the current situation of the economy.

The chairman of the group, Abubakar Yusuf, while speaking with our correspondent, insisted that the calls were completely against the aim and objectives of the protests.

He said the only aim of the protesters in the region was for the government to address the issue of bad governance and hunger across the land and not for any regime change.

As such, he condemned those calling for a regime change, saying they are working for a sinister purpose, which is different from the original aim of the protests.

Therefore, he urged “the security operatives to investigate such unpatriotic calls and unmask the evil persons drumming such strident but divisive calls.”
