The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has disclosed that, contrary to reports, it was the university management that discovered and reported the 178 fake Corps members to the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC).
The institution stated this in a statement issued by the Registrar of the university, Gabriel Egbe. The university, however, commended the NYSC for releasing the names of 93 unqualified persons who were fraudulently mobilised for the one-year National Youth Service Scheme, following a complaint launched by the university in 2023.
The statement reads: “It should be noted that it was the university’s management that exposed the criminal act, and brought it to the attention of NYSC and other organisations, and not the other way round.
“We consider the action taken by NYSC to be a helpful step towards dealing with criminal impunity and desperation. While commending the Corps for this move, it is necessary to let the public know the facts about the whole uncanny story of the infiltration of our university portal with unqualified names for exemption from, and participation in national service.”
According to the registrar, in September 2023, internal sources drew the attention of the management that a certain individual, who had not graduated, was on national service, purportedly from the institution. This led to an investigation that confirmed the allegation and revealed 10 more cases of infiltration of the NYSC portal.
