Describing Akande as “a truly progressive and committed Awoist,” Tinubu lauded his contributions to Nigeria’s democracy, nation-building, and development.
According to the President, Akande’s life epitomises selfless service, which has been his guiding principle throughout his political career.
This was contained in a Thursday statement signed by the Special Adviser, Information and Strategy to the President, Bayo Onanuga
“Baba Akande has consistently demonstrated integrity, wisdom, and a deep commitment to the progressive ideals of our democracy.
“His selfless service to our nation, from his time as Secretary to the Government of Old Oyo State and later as Deputy Governor, to his tenure as Governor of Osun State and his pioneering role in the APC, is truly commendable,” Tinubu stated.
The President highlighted Akande’s pivotal role in the APC’s victory in the 2015 elections, noting that his efforts were instrumental in laying the foundation for the party’s success.
“Chief Akande’s leadership and vision were crucial in forming a solid and united APC, leading to a historic electoral victory. His contributions have left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political landscape,” Tinubu remarked.
Reflecting on their shared experiences, Tinubu recalled their collaboration in the pro-democracy group, NADECO, during the struggle to restore democracy in Nigeria.
“We have walked through history together, and I am grateful for Baba Akande’s unwavering support, wise counsel, and steadfast partnership in establishing progressive governance in our country,” he said.
The President described Akande’s 86th birthday as a moment to celebrate his invaluable contributions and to honor his legacy of inspiring younger generations.
“I wish Baba Akande more grace, strength, and fulfillment as he continues to serve our nation and impart his wisdom to the next generation,” Tinubu concluded.
