Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, has said the federal government would create jobs for citizens by mitigating the impacts of climate change.

Balarabe Lawal said the federal government over the years has issued a total sum of ₦27 billion Green Bond for the purpose of financing climate-smart projects.

Lawal said this on Wednesday while delivering his speech at the 8th Meeting of the Green Bond Advisory Group in Lagos.

Lawal called for collaboration between governments and private sector “particularly financial institutions, development partners and capital market operators to create a robust ecosystem that supports green investments as well as drive impactful changes to our environment.”

For the purpose of financing climate-smart projects across various sectors, over the past few years Nigeria issued two Green Bonds amounting to a total sum of ₦27 billion.

“As we ready for the third issuance, our focus is enhancing the effectiveness of our Green Bond Program and also ensure that the proceeds realized are used efficiently to achieve climate and environmental development goals focused on financing projects that align with our Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement as well as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.

The Minister of Environment said the federal government would place emphasis on renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, green building and resilient infrastructure sectors.

He said by prioritizing emphasis on the above sectors, climate change impacts would be mitigated to create jobs for the citizens.

“Particular emphasis will be placed on sectors such as Renewable Energy, Sustainable Agriculture, Green Building, Afforestation and Resilient Infrastructure. By prioritizing these, we will mitigate the impact of climate change as well as drive economic growth that creates jobs, promotes social inclusion and build resilience capability for various communities across the nation,” Lawal said.
