‘Weed off political night walkers from judiciary’ – Lawyer, Idam writes CJN Kekere-Ekun

Activist lawyer, Madubuachi Idam, has urged the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, to shut the door against political night walkers and weed off judicial officers who are players in the black-market court.

Idam urged Kekere-Ekun to also address the issue of those who hand down court orders and counter court orders to desperate politicians without regard for how their actions impact the society negatively.

On Friday, President Bola Tinubu swore in Kekere-Ekun as the new CJN following the retirement of her predecessor, Olukayode Ariwoola.

Speaking after assuming the role of CJN, Kekere-Ekun vowed to take the Nigerian judiciary to greater heights and restore public confidence in the system during her tenure.

However, in an open letter to the new CJN, Kekere-Ekun said: “It’s a new dawn in Nigeria, as the Judiciary has been gifted a brand-new leadership by the swearing-in of His Lordship, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, JSC, as the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

“Unfortunately, except for those directly benefiting from the system, most Nigerians are seemingly unbothered about the news, hence the cheerless atmosphere across the length and breath of the nation, notwithstanding the importance of the position.

“His Lordship, the new CJN may choose to have her name planted in honour or prepare to fade with the winds of time. The choice remains His Lordship’s exclusive right.

“After all, the majority of Nigerians have lost confidence in the judiciary already. Evidently, His Lordship’s press interview vindicates me on this when she promised to ‘restore public confidence in the Judiciary’.

“By implication, His Lordship is also aware that Nigerians have lost hope in the judiciary.

“His Lordship needs no advice to succeed, other than to shut the door against political night walkers, weed off judicial officers who are players in the black-market court; those who hand down court orders and counter court orders like a piece of candy to desperate politicians, without regard to their negative impact on society.

“These alone, without more if His Lordship does, will etch her name in the sands of Nigerian history and possibly restore the lost hope in the Judiciary.

“It’s a new dawn for Nigeria, a new opportunity to rescue the drowning justice sector.”
