In an attempt to boost cycling in Edo State, the Wheelers Cycling Club was launched on Tuesday in Benin, with the Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, as the grand patron.

The co-founder and president of the club, Stephen Izedome, said the need to catch them young was the reason for setting up the club, noting that it would also enhance the popularity of the sport in the state.

A former cycling champion in his heyday, Izedome, said that the club, which is the first of its kind in the state, would also help prepare state athletes for competitions.

He said, “We need to identify the talents, catch them young, and nurture them into national and world champions. I thank Chief Gabriel Igbinedion for this opportunity.”

The patron of the club, Emma Igbinosa, who is also the Permanent Secretary of the Edo States Sports Commission, commended the Izedome for the initiative and accepted to serve as the patron of the club.

He said, “I am happy with this initiative that is coming at this time when the old generation is gradually fading out. The young ones will be encouraged to become champions and dominate the sport.

Other members that will run the club are Azu Godson (co-founder and vice president), Bello Orogho (head coach), Angela Okon (assistant coach), Elder Emmanuel Ajibola (secretary), Mrs. Yemisi Ofodu (matron), and three others.
