Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has attributed the increasing insecurity in the South East region to a decline in values such as respect for human life, love, and unity among the youth.
Abaribe, who represents the Abia South senatorial district in the National Assembly, highlighted the need to revive trade schools and certification programs to engage young people and provide financial support, preventing them from falling prey to criminal activities.
At the South East Youth Leadership Development and Value Reorientation Summit in Enugu on Friday, Abaribe underscored the importance of returning to foundational values like love, unity, truthfulness, and respect for human life to ensure a better future for the region.
He emphasized that embracing these values can empower the youth to drive transformative change, leading to a more secure and prosperous South East.
“We must return to the values upon which our communities were built—love, unity, truthfulness, and respect for human life—if we are to create the future we desire,” Abaribe stated.
He urged the youth to resist being used by criminals who disrupt economic activities under the guise of seeking self-actualization.
“As young people, you must understand your values and refuse to be tools for destruction. The future belongs to you,” he said.
In her opening remarks, the Director-General of the South-East Governors Forum and convener of the summit, Senator Uche Ekwunife, highlighted the importance of empowering youths for regional growth and national development.
Ekwunife stressed that the program aims to inspire youths to become responsible leaders, following in the footsteps of prominent figures like Nnamdi Azikiwe, Alex Ekwueme, and Dora Akunyili, who have made significant contributions to the region’s history.
She encouraged participants to reflect on their potential, talents, and skills to foster positive change in their communities, paving the way for a brighter future for the South East region and Nigeria as a whole.
