Bayer Leverkusen’s head coach, Xabi Alonso, has addressed the speculation surrounding his potential appointment as Jurgen Klopp’s successor at Liverpool.
The Spanish coach, Xabi Alonso, revealed that he intentionally chose not to pursue the position, as his primary focus was firmly set on leading his current team to championship glory in the Bundesliga.
During a press conference ahead of the UEFA Champions League game clash between Bayer Leverkusen and Liverpool, Alonso acknowledged the rumours that circulated in March regarding the vacancy created by Klopp’s announcement to leave Anfield.
Despite being considered a strong candidate for the role, Alonso decided to remain committed to Bayer Leverkusen for at least another season.
“I was aware of the discussions about me possibly replacing Klopp,” Alonso explained. “However, at that moment, my attention was solely devoted to winning the league with Leverkusen. Our entire focus was on that goal, and I did not engage in negotiations with any clubs.”
Note that after failing to appoint Xabi Alonso, Liverpool opted for Arne Slot to fill the managerial vacancy. Under his guidance, the team has made a strong start to the Premier League season, currently sitting at the top of the table after 10 matches.
On the other hand, Bayer Leverkusen have made significant strides under the management of Xabi Alonso. Recall that he led them to win the German Bundesliga and reach the Europa League final last season.
