Yiaga Africa and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Nigeria and Ghana have partnered to strengthen democracy in Africa, lamenting its decline. This was disclosed at the launch of ‘DemoCreatives,’ an innovation that collaborates with creatives in Africa to promote democracy.

Tagged, ‘Leveraging the power, influence and resources of creatives to promote and defend democracy,’ the event, held in Lagos at the weekend, had, in attendance, artists, musicians and other African representatives.

The Director of Programmes, Yiaga Africa, Cynthia Mbamalu, stressed the need for Africa to have a democracy that speaks to the needs of the continent. According to her, following the trend and conversations on the continent, there have been conversations about the decline of democracy.

Mbamalu noted that there is a need to constantly look for ways to support the system that promotes the right to free expression in Africa, stressing that without that right, Africans cannot achieve democracy.

On his part, the Executive Director of CDD-Ghana and Director of the WADEMOS Network, Kwasi Prempeh, said that the event has been long in the making, pointing out that in the early post-pandemic period, CDD-Ghana began to reflect on the general decline in democracy, good governance and inclusive development in the West African sub-region.
