The monarch of the Yoruba community in France, Oba Bamidele Aderounmu, has called on Yoruba sons and daughters to extend support to the victims of the tragic stampede in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The incident, which occurred during a Christmas funfair at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, claimed the lives of no fewer than 35 children. The event was reportedly organised by Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the ex-queen of the Ooni of Ife, in December last year.

Following the tragedy, Prophetess Silekunola and two others were arrested and arraigned before the Iyaganku Magistrate Court in Ibadan.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Oba Aderounmu emphasised the need for both spiritual and material assistance for the families affected by the incident.

The monarch’s statement read: “It is with profound and deep sorrow that we extend our heartfelt condolences to the grieving parents and families who have lost their beloved children in the devastating stampede that occurred at the Islamic High School, Bashorun District, Ibadan, Nigeria. This is a tragedy of unimaginable scale, and our hearts ache for the lives lost and the families forever impacted.

“We stand united with the affected families, offering our deepest sympathies and unwavering support during this time of unspeakable grief. The loss of these wonderful children is a tragedy that touches the core of our humanity, and as a community, we mourn together.

“This tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the importance of vigilance and preparedness in ensuring the safety of our communities. We trust and have full confidence that the government and the relevant authorities will handle the situation with the utmost diligence and care by implementing measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

“In this time of mourning, we urge everyone to come together in solidarity and support for the affected families. Let us offer not only our prayers but also practical assistance to those in need as they navigate this harrowing ordeal.”

The monarch further expressed solidarity with the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, broadcaster Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, and the Principal of Islamic High School, Mr. Fasasi, recognising their commitment to addressing the aftermath of the incident with compassion and urgency.
