The Zamfara State government has announced the dismissal of 109 contracted teachers, citing their failure to abide by contract terms.
Addressing newsmen at his office in Gusau, the State capital, the Executive Chairman of the Zamfara State Teachers Service Board, Muhammad Aliyu Anka, stated that some of the teachers had abandoned their contracts to teach in private schools while still collecting salaries from the government.
Anka further explained that many of the teachers were not attending schools to teach, leaving volunteers to teach the pupils in their absence as there were no teachers available.
He noted that these volunteer teachers are qualified and are not receiving salaries from the State government.
“The need for engaging these volunteers became very necessary as the government prioritized the recruitment of 2,000 fresh graduates,” he added.
According to him, the agreement was that if a teacher had six months remaining on their contract, they should apply for renewal. He stated that most of the teachers failed to apply for renewal, indicating that they were no longer interested in the job.
Speaking further, the Executive Chairman said that the Board had been paying salaries and allowances to teachers where schools were not functioning.
“So, we recommended to the State government to terminate the contracts of teachers who did not abide by the rules and regulations of the Board.”
“The State government, therefore, decided to recruit 2,000 teachers to fill the gap.”
