10 Die In Spanish Retirement Home Fire Outbreak

Not less than ten elderly persons were killed in a fire outbreak at a retirement home in the northern Spanish town of Villafranca del Ebro early on Friday.

The national government’s top official in the region, Fernando Beltran told reporters that the inferno started in one of the rooms.

All the victims were elderly people living in the “Jardines de Villafranca” residence, Beltran said.

Authorities announced that fire started at around 5a.m. and it took about two hours for firefighters to put it out, a spokesperson for the regional government said.

Government said two elderly persons were in critical condition while several were being treated mainly for smoke inhalation, Mayor Volga Ramirez, said.

Ramirez said her husband helped evacuate the elderly.

Spokesperson of the regional government added that firefighters who came from around Zaragoza, a city 22 miles away from the home were at the scene with ambulances and police.

The cause of the fire was still being investigated.
