Abductor of Benue community leader killed, victim rescued

The Benue State Police Command has rescued the community leader of the Kunav United Development Association, Emmanuel Tor Yaji, who was abducted around 10 pm on Monday.

During the rescue operation, policemen were reported to have killed one of the abductors and apprehended one other.

Yaji, the President General of Kunav Development Association, was abducted by gunmen while in a gathering of his friends at his village, Tsar Mbaduku, in Vandeikya Local Government Area.

The spokesperson for the state police command had Tuesday afternoon issued a statement confirming the abduction of the community leader and called on the public to give useful information that could lead to the rescue of the abducted man.

Meanwhile, in the latest statement by the command’s spokesperson, Catherine Anene, she stated that the community leader was rescued around 1:30 pm on Tuesday.

The PPRO explained that one of the kidnappers was killed during the gun duel with the kidnappers.

The statement read in parts, “Following report of the kidnap of Mr. Emmanuel Tor Yaji in Vandeikya Local Government Area, an intense rescue operation was launched.

“On 31/12/2024 at about 1300hrs, the police team in Kwande Local Government Area located the kidnappers at Nambe Adikpo town and engaged them in a gun duel.

“One of the suspects sustained gunshot injuries and was eventually confirmed dead by a doctor. One of the suspects was arrested while two others took to their heels. Further investigation to arrest suspects at large is ongoing.”

The PPRO listed items recovered from the kidnappers to include one AK-47 rifle loaded with 12 rounds of live ammunition and three AK-47 magazine.

“The victim was rescued unhurt and has been reunited with friends and family,” the statement further read.
