Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi from Gombe State has been elected as the new President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Naija News reports that Abdullahi secured the position during the 8th Triennial National Delegates Conference held in Owerri, Imo State.
Abdullahi achieved a significant victory, garnering 436 votes, while his opponents, Dele Atunbi from the FCT Council and Muhammed Garba from the Kaduna Council, received 97 and 39 votes, respectively.
Currently affiliated with the Gombe Media Corporation (GMC), Abdullahi previously served as the National Deputy President of the NUJ and took over the presidency from Chris Isiguzo.
Meanwhile, a Deputy Director at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Abimbola Oyetunde, was also elected unopposed as the Deputy National President.
In his acceptance address, Abdullahi committed to promoting the interests and welfare of NUJ members, safeguarding press freedom, and maintaining high standards in journalism.
He highlighted the importance of collaboration with stakeholders to ensure that journalists can work safely and freely while advocating for their rights and protection.
“My administration will focus on capacity-building initiatives, including workshops, training, and mentorship programs to enhance our members’ skills,” he stated.
Naija News reports that the newly elected president of the NUJ emphasized the intention to utilize technology and innovation to adapt to the changing media environment and to strengthen connections among journalists and media organizations.
Abdullahi also underscored the necessity of collaboration with governmental agencies, civil society, and media proprietors to establish a conducive atmosphere for journalism to flourish in Nigeria.

The Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has since congratulated Abdullahi on his election as the National President of the NUJ.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, the Governor expressed his delight over Abdullahi’s significant victory, characterizing it as an extraordinary accomplishment and a point of great pride for both the state and the broader journalism community.

“As you begin this noble task, rest assured that Gombe State will stand firmly behind you. We are confident that under your leadership, the NUJ will witness a new era of progress, unity, and professionalism that will further elevate the role of journalism in promoting national development.
