Anambra police arrest man who supplies food to gunmen, recover pistol, ammunition

Police in Anambra State have arrested a man who supplies food to gunmen in their camps in various bushes in the state.

The man, whose name was not revealed, was also caught with three bags of cassava flakes, which is referred to as garri in Nigeria parlance, with gunpowder hidden in them.

Police Public Relations Officer of Anambra State Police command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who revealed this in a press release, said the man was arrested in Nanka, Aguata Local Government Area of the state.

He said: “Preliminary information revealed that the suspect was en route to a criminal camp to deliver groceries for consumption and the gunpowder for production of Improvised Explosives Devices (IED), also known as local bombs for the gang.

“Police-led Joint Security Force while on intelligence-driven routine patrol along the pillar-pole area of Aguata on 22/9/2024, intercepted the suspect (name withheld).

“He was carrying three bags of garri. The operatives upon search of the suspect discovered beneath the edible, a large quantity of gunpowder.

“The suspect is currently in custody and assisting the police to arrest the other gang members.”

Ikenga added that the police in another development arrested one Nelson Wisdom in a criminal hideout in Oba, and a pistol and live bullets were recovered from him.

He said: “Operatives of the Special Anti-Cultism Squad (SPACS) acting on credible information stormed a criminal hideout in Oba Idemili South LGA in the early hours of today 25/9/2024 and arrested one Nelson Wisdom ‘M’ from Etsako East, Edo State and recovered one locally fabricated pistol with two live ammunition.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam reiterates that the police command and other security agencies will continue to act on information to sustain the onslaught of operations to frustrate evil plans of the criminal elements in the state.”

He said the suspects would be charged to court when investigation into the matters had been concluded.
