Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has approved the recruitment of 3,000 teachers to be deployed to Junior and Senior Secondary Schools across the state.

The recruitment is part of efforts to strengthen the education sector and improve learning outcomes.

The announcement was made by the Project Coordinator of the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment in the state, Ali Gar, during a sensitisation meeting on the Girls Scholarship Programme with stakeholders from Bauchi Local Government on Thursday.

Gar explained that the recruitment of 3,000 teachers is one of the key actions needed for the successful implementation of the AGILE project in the state.

He clarified that 2,000 teachers would be assigned to Junior Secondary Schools, while 1,000 will be deployed to Senior Secondary Schools.

The move aims to address the pupil-to-teacher ratio in participating schools, ensuring better learning conditions.

“The teachers will be employed by the state government and will not be part of the AGILE project payroll.

“They will be recruited from the benefiting communities, which will encourage greater involvement from local teachers, facilitate monitoring, and foster a sense of ownership within the communities.”

In addition to the teacher recruitment, Gar also revealed that the AGILE project is set to commence the payment of Conditional Cash Transfers to approximately 9,000 girls registered as beneficiaries. This initiative will provide each beneficiary with a registration fee of N15,000 and a stipend of N20,000 for the first term. For the second and third terms, each girl will receive N10,000, contingent upon maintaining at least 75 per cent attendance.

Gar further mentioned that the necessary ICT equipment and skills acquisition tools for the project have been procured. However, he noted that only 9,000 out of the targeted 20,250 beneficiaries have been captured over the past 10 weeks.

He called on stakeholders to closely monitor the implementation of the project and ensure that teachers carry out their responsibilities effectively.

The Executive Chairman of Bauchi Local Government, Mahmood Babama’aji, praised the AGILE technical team for their dedication and expressed confidence in the ability of the School-Based Management Committees to successfully fulfill their roles in the project.

The recruitment of teachers and the roll-out of financial support for girls are significant steps in addressing educational challenges in Bauchi State, particularly for adolescent girls.
