Benue State government has terminated the lease of Makurdi Modern Market to private investors on long term lease and reverted full ownership back to government.

The market was leased to private investors by the immediate past administration in the state.

This was disclosed on Thursday by Benue State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Mnyim Fidelis.

Mnyim thanked Governor Hyacinth Alia for making it possible for the market to return back to government ownership.

He said the market will accommodate the interests of traders who went through untold hardship ranging from arbitrary tax imposition by the private owners as well as total neglect.

Mnyim called on the traders to report anyone who comes to them demanding any form of levies to the security agencies.

The highly elated traders were full of praise for the governor for making sure the market returned back to the government from private owners.

They were optimistic that the return of the market to the government would revive business activities in the state.

Mnnyin was at the Makurdi Modern Market alongside the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry Alumo Orpin and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Market Coordination, Isaac Akaanger.

DAILY POST reports that the lease of Makurdi Modern Market to private investors is one of the items being investigated by the Benue State Commission of Inquiry into sale/lease of government companies.
