A violent confrontation has erupted between soldiers from the Nigerian Army’s 14 Brigade, Ohafia, and unidentified gunmen in Umuchima village, located in the Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State.

According to The Nation, reports suggest that around 6 a.m., a convoy of over 15 Hilux vehicles and armored personnel carriers arrived at Umuchima, reportedly targeting gunmen believed to be hiding near a river that forms the boundary between Abia and Mbaise in Imo State.

Soldiers are said to have secured critical access points around the village, while some have engaged in combat with the gunmen in the surrounding bush. Gunfire is still reported to be ongoing.

As of now, neither the Nigerian Army nor the Abia State government has issued an official statement on the situation.

Naija News reports that this development comes shortly after Governor Alex Otti’s commitment to improving security in the region following discussions with top security officials.
