At least five security operatives were reportedly killed in a recent attack by gunmen in the Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Naija News learnt that seven individuals were killed in the incident, which occurred on Monday, December 30.
Among those killed were two unarmed civilians who were present in a compound making arrangements for a burial scheduled for January 2.
According to the Daily Post, a video clip obtained by the media platform shows the bodies of two victims, identified as members of the Anambra State Vigilante Group (AVG).
In response, the spokesperson for the state police command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, has verified the occurrence.
In a statement, he indicated that the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has initiated an immediate manhunt for the perpetrators.
The attack took place around 11:20 AM, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals, including two unarmed bystanders.
He said: “The Joint Security Team rescued one of the victims who is currently responding to treatment in a hospital.
“The CP while on an on-the-spot assessment visit to the scene interviewed some eyewitnesses of the incident. Information also had it that the armed men started shooting sporadically at a venue where preparations are ongoing for a burial ceremony slated for 2nd of January, 2025.
“Also, while escaping the scene, the armed men shot at two Security Operatives at a security Observation Post close to the Local Government Headquarters by the Express Road.”
Ikenga stated that the Commissioner of Police has expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the victims, particularly the residents of Ihiala, in light of this tragic event.
He also assured that efforts would be made to apprehend those responsible for the incident.
