A popular traditional boxing in Northern Nigeria, Dambe, is moving up by the day and has started to attract sponsors and more supporters in Kano.
This is made possible by the Dambe Warriors Tournament aimed at enhancing and promoting traditional sports.
The tournament has been changing the lives of young men who now enjoy very attractive income and publicity as they show off their capabilities to fans and audience unlike it was in the past.
Speaking about the development, the co-organiser of the tournament, Chidi Anyina explained how they were able to get to the current level promoting the popular traditional sport.
“The league saw the need to upgrade the status of the traditional sports, we want to be to the standard of premier or champions leagues that’s why you can see an upgraded arena today.
“It is our dream to upgrade and vision to continually upgrade the arena to be in the capacity of the stadium. Here we have up to 5000 people. What is limiting us is the size of the stadium so we are looking up to providing 20,000 seater capacity.
“We are putting the league in place to be properly structured, guiding the activities of sport not just like a random local fight that we have before. We are here also to give these fighters a room to develop and grow. These fighters are now earning even beyond some footballers in this country.”
The tournament has upgraded the sport which now takes place in a global standard boxing ring at the Ado Bayero Square (Gidan Dambe) in Kano.
Meanwhile, season three of the Dambe Warriors League took place Sunday’s evening in Kano with popular traditional boxers like Yar Mage, Zayyanu, Dogo Maitakwasara and Dan Najeriya participating.
