Former Big Brother Naija star and two-time Nigerian high jump champion, Mike Edwards, has celebrated a successful transition to professional boxing with a victory in his debut match against Jake Cornish.
The bout, which took place at the Dublin Arena on Saturday, saw Edwards emerge victorious by unanimous decision after all rounds, marking an impressive start to his boxing career.
Edwards, who surprised fans by announcing his shift from athletics to professional boxing in April, competed in the Misfits Boxing Cruiserweight division, an event managed by Nigerian-born professional boxer and social media personality, Olajide Williams, popularly known as KSI.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Misfits Boxing wrote, “An impressive MFB debut for #aireyys as he gets the decision victory. Mike Edwards gets his first #MisfitsBoxing win.”
Reflecting on his journey, Edwards expressed gratitude to his supporters, both those present at the event and those who watched from home.
He shared his excitement on his Instagram page, writing, “Survive and Advance. A massive thank you to everyone who came out to support me and to all of you who tuned in from home. I hope I made you proud!”
He also acknowledged support from his team and sponsors, highlighting the significance of his debut win.
Edwards’ journey into the world of professional boxing represents a remarkable shift from his background in track and field, and he looks forward to continuing his boxing career on this new path.
