The family of Professor Humphrey Nwosu, the former Chairman of Nigeria’s National Electoral Commission (NEC), has announced his death following a brief illness.
Professor Nwosu, who was 83, passed away on October 20, 2024. The announcement was made by his son, Engr. Nnaemeka Humphrey Nwosu.
Professor Nwosu was renowned for his unwavering commitment to democracy and his extensive academic contributions in the fields of political science and public administration.
Throughout his tenure as NEC Chairman, he was instrumental in implementing reforms that have had a profound and enduring effect on the electoral processes in Nigeria.
His efforts to ensure free and fair elections have left a significant mark on the nation’s political history.
The statement reads, “With a profound sense of sadness and deep grief, the family of distinguished Professor Humphrey Nwosu announces his death.
“He served as Chairman of Nigeria’s National Electoral Commission from 1989 to 1993 and remains a hero to millions for his pivotal role in laying the democratic foundation of the country.”
Prof. Nwosu’s leadership of NEC included the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s fairest and most credible election, which laid important groundwork for Nigeria’s democracy.
His distinguished academic career included degrees in Political Science from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the University of California, Berkeley, where he achieved First Class Honors and Magna Cum Laude distinctions.
His publications, including Laying the Foundation for Nigeria’s Democracy: My Account of June 12, 1993 Presidential Election and its Annulment, contributed to Nigeria’s political scholarship.
Prof. Nwosu is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mrs. Stella Nwosu, their four children, six grandchildren, and extended family.
