The FCT Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has apprehended over 100 traffic offenders in Abuja within the last week as part of its ongoing “Operation Green Light Enforcement” campaign in the city center.

FCT Sector Commander of the FRSC, Muta’a Chorrie, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, highlighted the persistent issue of motorists, particularly commercial drivers, routinely ignoring traffic lights.

“We have noticed a troubling trend where many motorists, especially commercial drivers, habitually disregard traffic lights,” Chorrie stated.

He emphasised the Corps’ commitment to enforcing traffic regulations without bias while ensuring road safety for all. “The Corps will continue to sanction traffic offenders, regardless of their status, to ensure sanity on the roads,” Chorrie vowed.

Addressing the problem of indiscriminate parking by commercial drivers, the FCT Sector Commander stressed that the FRSC had increased the mobility of patrol personnel to curb these infractions.

“The FCT Command has been engaging with Transport Union Leaders in regular meetings to address the menace in the six area councils of the Territory,” he added.

Announcing the arrest of the 100 traffic offenders, Chorrie reiterated the Corps’ resolve to maintain order on the roads, assuring “We will not relent until sanity is restored on our highways.”.

He appealed to motorists to avoid overloading their vehicles, pledging that the FRSC would not tolerate actions that compromise the country’s image and road safety.

He also advised Nigerians to refrain from boarding overloaded vehicles which poses significant risks during emergencies.

“With the rainy season setting in, we urge road users to drive within approved speed limits and park at convenient places when the rain is heavy,” Chorrie advised.
