A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has stated that he is not opposed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, insisting he is politically independent and not bound to any individual or political figure.
Sowunmi, a former spokesperson for PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, made the comments during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday. His remarks followed widespread reactions to his recent visit to President Tinubu.

Clarifying the context of his visit, Sowunmi said it should not be interpreted as a betrayal of his relationship with Atiku. According to him, he reserves the right to make independent political decisions.
“I am at liberty as an adult to take decisions. I am not tied to anybody. I am not anti-Tinubu. I own my mouth, I own my words, and I own my arguments,” Sowunmi said.
He further praised President Tinubu’s political savvy, asserting that the president is significantly more tactful than his major opponents, including Labour Party’s Peter Obi.
“Do you know the difference between Bola and them? He doesn’t have one approach to dealing with everybody. By miles, he is smarter than them. He is smarter than Peter Obi. He is smarter than them,” Sowunmi declared.
His comments come months after another former Atiku spokesperson, Daniel Bwala, shifted allegiance to Tinubu. In November 2024, Bwala was appointed Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication shortly after a closed-door meeting with Tinubu.
Sowunmi’s remarks have further fueled conversations about internal divisions within the PDP and growing defections or realignments in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
