The Nigeria Police Force, Thursday evening, detained controversial social critic Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan.
Although VDM’s offence was not known at the time of filing this report, his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, said he was detained after honouring a police invitation.
In a post on X on Thursday, Adeyanju disclosed that his client had honoured a similar invitation on Wednesday.
His post read, “Our client, VDM, has been detained after honouring a police invitation just like yesterday. VDM has been consistent in stating that the Nigerian Police are our friends, even when we all know they are not.”
Efforts to obtain a reaction from the Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, proved abortive, as calls to his line went unanswered.
The police had condemned the use of its uniform by VDM in one of his latest videos and ordered an investigation to determine the source of the attire.
In the video, VeryDarkMan wore a police uniform and jokingly introduced himself as a “Chief Superintendent of Police of the Online Division.”
Following the backlash that ensued from his actions, he released a video on Thursday apologising for using attire resembling the official police uniform.
VeryDarkMan also advised Nigerians to seek proper authorisation before wearing police attire to avoid misunderstandings or legal repercussions.
