Kano LG to modernise 140-year-old market

The Rano Local Government Area of Kano State has announced plans to modernise the 140-year-old  Rano Central Market by building 4,000 ultra-modern shops.

The initiative aims to boost local commerce and enhance economic development within the community.

The council chairman, Muhammad Yau, made this disclosure during an audio-visual presentation of the market’s layout design to over 50 traders’ associations, community development associations, and other stakeholders.

In a press statement shared with The PUNCH on Monday, the Zonal Information Officer for Rano, Rabiu Kura, quoted Yau as expressing his enthusiasm for the project.

“This project has the potential to enhance economic growth significantly,” Yau said. “It will also provide a more organised space for businesses to thrive and benefit the entire community.”

In a press statement shared with The PUNCH, the Zonal Information Officer for Rano, Rabiu Khalil Kura, added that the new market would serve as a central hub for trade and commerce while creating numerous employment opportunities.

Architect Aliyu Abba of Acube Design and Properties, who presented the market’s layout, detailed the modern features of the planned reconstruction.

He emphasised that the design aimed to meet the demands of a growing commercial hub.

Reflecting on the historical importance of the market, Alhaji Yusuf Roka said, “The 140-year-old Rano Central Market has remained unchanged for decades.

This reconstruction is a long-overdue development, and we thank Chairman Naziru Yau for his vision and commitment.”

Representatives of traders’ unions also lauded the initiative.

Alhaji Balarabe Fawa, a representative, noted, “This project will transform the way we do business and provide traders with much-needed facilities.”

The Chairman of the Grain Sellers’ Union, Yakubu Sani, added, “We appreciate the council’s efforts in improving our working environment and promoting economic growth in Rano.”
