GRAND Patron of the Apostles of Peace Society International and Bishop of Lagos West, Anglican Communion, Rev. James Odedeji, and the Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola have called on Nigerians to seek peace and justice in all their dealings.

Speaking at the Annual Peace Lecture and Award Ceremony of the Apostles of Peace International, Ogunsola in her keynote address titled, ‘Christians and the Struggle for Peace and Justice in Nigeria,’ called on the religious community to champion harmony and justice.

The Annual Peace Lecture and Award Ceremony of the Apostles of Peace International, titled, ‘Peace in Nigeria,’ was held in Lagos.

She suggested that religion, often a source of conflict, must instead be a catalyst for peace through interfaith dialogue.

Ogunsola said, “Peace is a mindset. We must learn to be humble. We should watch our anger. Love is obedience. It hopes for the best in others.”

She added that through advocacy for justice and fairness by speaking out against corruption, inequality, and human rights abuses, were ways to solve disputes and conflicts around the country.

She advised the church to “Advocate for policies and practices that promote justice and fairness, addressing some of the root causes of conflict.

Provide Social Services;  education, healthcare, and vocational training, helping to alleviate poverty and provide opportunities for economic empowerment, which can reduce frustration and unrest. Church leaders can act as neutral mediators in conflicts between communities or groups to find peaceful resolutions.

“Provide aid and support to internally displaced persons and refugees, Organise to bring them to church and contribute to their reintegration into society.

”Promote values of non-violence, reconciliation and forgiveness through sermons, teachings, and community programs, can encourage individuals and communities to seek peaceful solutions to disputes. Community Development Projects –  Initiatives such as building schools, clean water projects, and agricultural support can improve living conditions and reduce competition for scarce resources, which often fuels conflict.”

She advised the Christian faiths to build and strengthen community bonds, both within the church and in the broader society, create inclusive and welcoming environments, provide and offer emotional and spiritual support to those facing challenges, and providing encouragement, prayer, and a listening ear.

”Teach and mentor others, help others to grow in their faith, develop their skills, and navigate life’s challenges,”Ogunsola said.

Odedeji, said through collective efforts, a Nigeria where every citizen would live in harmony and security could be achieved.

He said, “Instead of protest, let’s engage in dialogue. Protests at this time may be  counter-productive. It’s not a good time to protest. Please, let’s deploy dialogue,  friendship and see how we can allow peace reign in our country.

“From experience, most protests I have witnessed have always been hijacked by unscrupulous elements who can’t follow the ideals of peaceful protest. Let’s avoid

inflicting more pains on ourselves and the country under the guise of protest.

“Let’s seek to dialogue and profitably en[1]gage the government for a better society.”

Also speaking, National President, Apostles of Peace International, Mr Paul Ajisafe, . We seek to reflect on our past achievements, renew our commitment to peace, and chart a course for the future.

He added that the lecture was not just an academic exercise but a clarion call to action, a reminder that peace is both a journey and a destination.

He said, “We gather to chart a course for the future, a testament to our unwavering belief in the power of unity and dialogue. It is a call to action for all of us to continue striving for a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria. In a world often marred by conflict and division, your presence here is a symbol of hope. It reminds us that peace is not just an aspiration but a tangible goal. Together, through our collective efforts, we can build a Nigeria where every citizen can live in harmony and security.”
