Some members of the National Transition Committee of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Tuesday called on the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, to resign.
The committee, together with some party members, gathered at the Labour Party headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday to demand the immediate resignation of Abure.
LEADERSHIP reports that Abure seems to have the backing of some powerful people in the party amid the call for his resignation.
Led by its acting chairman, Abdulwaheed Omar, the NLC members chanted solidarity songs while calling for Abure’s resignation, citing the expiration of his tenure as the chairman of the party.
Even though the party is yet to issue an official statement, Abure has consistently said he was duly elected during the party’s convention in Asaba, Delta State earlier in the year.
Upon arrival at the party’s headquarters, the NLC members met the gates shut with resistance from security officials.
The police personnel at the premises also used tear gas to disperse the protesters while attempting to gain entry into Abure’s office.
