Maliya Wins Shira LG By-Election

Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) has declared Babangida Ishaq Abdullahi (Maliya) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the newly elected chairman of Shira local government area, following a by-election conducted yesterday.

Returning officer Kabiru Abba who announced the result also declared Ali A. Tumfafi as the elected deputy chairman.

Governor Bala Mohammed congratulated Hon. Babangida Maliya on what he described as a well-deserved landslide victory.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Mukhtar Gidado, the governor commended BASIEC for its professionalism and the credible conduct of the election.

“This victory reflects the confidence the people of Shira have in Hon. Maliya’s leadership and the PDP’s progressive vision.”

The by-election followed the impeachment of the former chairman, Hon. Abdullahi Ibrahim Beli, and his deputy, Hon. Usman Adamu, by the Shira legislative council on March 3, 2025. Their removal was based on allegations of gross misconduct, financial mismanagement, dereliction of duty and abuse of office.
