The Kano State Judiciary, on Sunday, counted its losses after miscreants, under the guise of hunger protest, invaded the high court, vandalised offices and made away with exhibits in ongoing cases, including guns recovered from suspected criminals.

The spokesperson for Kano State High Court, Baba  Ibrahim, in a statement on Sunday, said the judiciary had launched a probe to track the vandals and bring them to justice.

He recalled that on Thursday,  rioters, who claimed to be #EndBadGovernment protesters, broke into the  premises of the headquarters of the state high court, vandalised offices and “stole an unspecified amount of money and guns seized from kidnappers and kept as exhibits in ongoing cases.”

Ibrahim said, “Private and official vehicles parked on the premises of the court were razed, while some were vandalised by the protesters.

“Offices,  including that of the Chief Judge and other judges in the court, were vandalised. The protesters destroyed the new and old case files and scattered everything in the buildings.

“Exhibits, including guns kept in the court’s store, were also looted.

“This is the first time the Kano State Judiciary has witnessed such an incident. Vehicles parked on the court’s promises were also vandalised, and looted.”

The vandalism of the Kano court is reminiscent of how miscreants invaded, looted and set ablaze Lagos State’s oldest high court in the Igbosere area during the 2020 #EndSARS protest.

Meanwhile, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Kano State, Musa Kwankwaso, has called on President Bola Tinubu to hold Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, responsible for the destruction, vandalism and loss of lives and property in Kano during the first day of anti-hunger protest last Thursday.

Kwankwaso, who was a commissioner under the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, stated this on Sunday in Kano while addressing newsmen on the protest as well as the achievements of President Bola Tinubu in the last one year.

He alleged that it was the state governor who called on the public to come out and protest and even said he would wait for them at the government house to receive their complaints and promised to forward them to the Presidency for action.

“The hungry and angry people engaged in mayhem and wanton destruction of lives and property for which the governor should take responsibility.

“In Kano, it was the governor who called the hungry and angry people to come out to protest. Now that people have been killed and property vandalised, he should take responsibility and pay the compensation.

“Let the victims seek the services of competent lawyers, go to court and seek compensation from the state because it was the governor who asked youths to come out to protest even as his boss Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has called on the people not to protest. He must pay for compensation.

“As for what Senator Kwankwaso did, I commend him, it is true that we should prepare our votes against the 2027 election instead of engaging in protest.

“We are drawing the attention of Mr President to instruct the Kano State Governor to pay the compensation for the damages, looting and loss of lives suffered by the people of Kano.”
