The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and other Allied Institutions (NASU) staged a protest on Tuesday over the Federal Government’s decision to withhold their salaries for the past four months.

Comrade Alasan Abdullahi, NASU Chairman at the Federal University Dutse (FUD), disclosed this after the protest at the university.

He expressed the unions’ dismay at the Federal Government’s decision to pay four months’ withheld salaries to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) while neglecting other members of the association.

“We are protesting to show our concern over the Federal Government’s selective payment to ASUU, leaving out other union members,” he said. “Are we not all university staff?”

Abdullahi added that if the Government does not respond to their demands, the unions will proceed with a warning strike.

A meeting between the unions and the Federal Ministry of Education on Thursday ended without a clear commitment to paying the withheld salaries or resolving other pending issues.

The union leadership has, therefore, instructed chapters across various universities nationwide to begin sensitization activities starting from Monday, July 8, and has called for a campus protest on Tuesday, July 9.
