The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have reaffirmed their commitment to proceed with their planned protest on Tuesday.
They are demanding the payment of outstanding salary arrears owed to their members, and have vowed not to back down until their demands are met.
NASU National President, Makolo Hassan, stated this during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday.
Hassan said, “Apart from the failed meeting of Thursday, we have not heard anything from anybody and our members across the country met in their various branches today and they will hit the ground running as from tomorrow.:
According to the union leader, despite their warning strike several months ago, the Federal Government has neglected to meet the unions’ demands.
Hasan said that following Tuesday’s protest, the unions plan to escalate their demonstrations by taking their grievances directly to the nation’s capital, Abuja.
“We will appraise it by next week Thursday. On the 18th, we are going to do the national protest in Abuja and after the national protest, if nothing is done, we will get back to the table.
“The two unions will provide the next line of action,” the NASU chief said.
In March, the unions went on a warning strike to push for their demands.
The NASU and SSANU unions have instructed their members to stage a nationwide protest on July 9, 2024, across all state chapters, with a follow-up national protest scheduled in Abuja on July 18, 2024, as stated in a circular addressed to all branch chairmen of the respective unions.
The circular was co-signed by the General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, and the National President of SSANU, Mohammed Ibrahim.
This was after NASU and SSANU gave the Federal Government a two-week ultimatum in June to meet their demands.
Campuses nationwide are expected to be shut down as a result of Tuesday’s strike.
