The Lagos State Government, through the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, on Thursday, charged a popular online influencer, Suraj Oyewale, known as #SirJarus, to court for allegedly assaulting his wife.
The DSVA announced that #SirJarus had been arraigned before the Ogba Magistrate Court 5 on two counts: one for alleged assault against his wife, and another for conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
The DVCA’s post on the X.com platform read: “Surajudeen Oyetunji Oyewole (@SirJarus) has been charged to Court, (Court 5, Ogba Magistrate Court) on Two Counts.
“Count l: Assault against his wife.
“Count ll: Conduct Likely to Cause Breach of Peace,” the agency said.
This development comes after the DSVA had earlier in June reported that an allegation of abuse involving #SirJarus had been referred for investigation. At the time, #SirJarus had addressed the issue on Twitter, providing his account of the incident involving him and his wife, Mrs Oyewale Ayoola.
In his now-deleted tweets, Oyewale alleged that his wife engaged in fetish practices and provocative behaviour, which he claimed led to a physical altercation between them. The DSVA has reiterated that the Lagos State Government maintains a zero-tolerance stance against domestic violence in any form.
The Head of Public Affairs Unit at the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, Adejoke Ladenegan-Oginni, said the agency would take the case involving the online influencer #SirJarus very seriously noting that as the statutory agency in the state responsible for preventing and responding to domestic and sexual violence, the DSVA views domestic violence in any form as unacceptable.
“We have, as an agency referred this to the Commissioner of Police (Gender Desk Department) to ensure that investigation commences.”
The agency’s statements on this case have sparked widespread discussions and reactions on social media, particularly on the X platform.
