The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senate caucus has dismissed claims that the party is on the verge of collapse, asserting that despite recent defections, the PDP remains strong and is actively restructuring ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday after plenary, Senate Minority Leader and head of the PDP Senate caucus, Senator Abba Moro, described the challenges facing the party as normal occurrences in any democratic setting. He emphasized that the party was far from disintegrating and was, in fact, working towards reconciliation and revitalization.

“Contrary to rumours making the rounds that the PDP has collapsed, the party has not collapsed,” Moro stated. “Even here in the Senate, we still have former governors serving under the PDP platform who have not defected. The party remains strong.”
He added that a series of strategic activities had been put together to reposition the party in preparation for the 2027 elections.
As part of the revival effort, Moro announced that a reconciliation committee led by former Senate President and ex-Governor of Kwara State, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has been constituted. The committee’s mandate is to engage with aggrieved members and bring them back into the party’s fold.
On speculations regarding a potential coalition between former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi ahead of 2027, Moro described such moves as positive and in line with the broader discussions about opposition unity.
“There’s nothing wrong with that development. Conversations are ongoing, and building a coalition is being considered as we prepare for the next elections,” he said.
Moro reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to playing its role as the leading opposition party and dismissed suggestions that the recent wave of defections signals the party’s end.
