Police Confirm Release Of 20 Abducted Medical Students

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the release of 20 medical and dental students who were abducted in the Otukpo area on August 16.

The students, who are from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos, were en route to the annual convention of the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students in Enugu when they were kidnapped by gunmen.

The abductors had initially contacted the families of the victims, demanding a ransom of ₦50 million for their release. However, the police have confirmed that no ransom was paid.

The force public relations officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, announced in a statement that the students were rescued through tactical and professional efforts.

He commended the collaboration between security agencies, locals, and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) for their dedication and resilience in ensuring the safe return of the students.

The statement reads, “We confirm the release of our brothers and sisters and some other Nigerians who have been in captivity on Friday 23rd August 2024 in Ntunkon forest, Benue State.

“Without any ransom paid. Contrary to some tweets and unconfirmed stories that some money was paid, no kobo was paid to release them.

“They were actually rescued tactically and professionally. We commend the security agencies, locals, and ONSA for their commitment and resilience.”
