The House of Representatives’ Committee on Aviation has questioned the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo over the level of decayed infrastructure at the country’s local and international airports.

Chairman of the House Committee, Hon. Abdullah Idris Garba interrogated the Minister during a meeting of the panel with officials of the ministry.

Speaking before the meeting went into closed doors, Garba described the state of infrastructure at various airports as worrisome, noting that they need urgent government intervention.

The House Committee chairman also said the safety of personnel and stakeholders at the nation’s airports cannot be overemphasised, adding that the major assignment of the committee is to help in identifying the equipment and other items needed to revatilise the aviation sector.

The minister, in his presentation, also expressed concern on the level of infrastructural decay at the nation’s airports, saying it was a serious issue of concern to the ministry.

He identified safety assessment within the industry as well as an international audit by International Civil Aviation Authority as those things the ministry needed and is currently doing.

Keyamo, however, assured lawmakers that the ministry was compiling a list of requirements and equipment for upgrade and safety standards requirements to bring all the airports to international safety standards.
