The General Manager, Ondo State Sports Council, Sunday Fagite, has said the state’s contingent to the 8th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, will excel in their various events as a way of showing appreciation for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s support.

Ondo State’s contingent, which arrived in Asaba on Tuesday, will compete in 14 sports at the 10-day event.

Fagite, who addressed the contingent on arrival, advised them to see the tournament as an avenue to make a name for themselves and make Ondo State people proud.

“The support from our governor must be commended; he is a sports-loving man who knows where the shoe pinches, and we shall make him proud at the end of the tournament,” Fagite said.

Before they departed Akure, the Ondo State capital, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, also advised them to be good ambassadors of the state.

“I believe you are well prepared for the event in Asaba. Please go there and exhibit your talent and win medals; remember to be good ambassadors of our Sunshine State. God will go with you, be with you during your stay, and will lead you back home safe with medals.”

The opening ceremony of the youth games is billed for Wednesday (today) at the main bowl of the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

Chairman, LOC, Solomon Ogba, said that Wednesday’s opening ceremony would capture a variety of things, particularly the rich tradition of the people.

“Delta State has a very rich tradition, and we are going to display some of them on Wednesday. As you all know, sports and music go together. Some of our top musicians will be on the ground to thrill the young athletes and visitors on Wednesday,” Ogba stated.

Delta is hosting the 8th National Youth Games after staging the 7th edition in 2023. This year’s Games, which started Monday, September 9, will run till September 19, with over 5,000 athletes from different states vying for medals.
