The Vice-Chancellor of Western Delta University (WDU), Prof. Augustine Ikelegbe, has assured parents and students of the institution of safety after a robbery incident that occurred at the institution last Thursday.

Criminal elements entered the main hostel of the University, harassed some students and stole mobile phones and power banks. No serious injuries were, however, reported.

Describing the incident as unprecedented in the history of the university, the VC said adequate measures have been put in place to ensure the university is now safer.

Ikelegbe, in a statement, added that efforts were being made to ensure that the criminals who perpetrated the acts were apprehended and made to face the wrath of the law.

The statement read in part, “The Vice Chancellor, Professor Augustine Ikelegbe, and Management of Western Delta University, express deep sympathy with our dear students, staff, parents and stakeholders, over the robbery incident that occurred in the early hours of Thursday, 20th June, 2024, when some criminal elements entered the Main Campus, and harassed students in the Main Hostel, some of whom lost phones and power banks.

“The situation was quickly brought under control by the intervention of security agencies, including the Delta Hawk, Police, Army and NSCDC.

“Management understands that affected students are traumatised and parents are worried about the situation which is unprecedented in the history of the University.

“We are grateful to God that there were no serious injuries. Management assures all of our deep concerns and pain.

“Management has been extensively liaising and consulting security agencies and stakeholders on the incidence. Investigations are ongoing and the criminal elements would be apprehended and punished according to the law.

“The Vice Chancellor wishes to assure parents and the general public that with the measures in place, the Campus is safer and more secured. The University prioritises Student welfare and wellbeing and Management is making extensive efforts to make students more comfortable and safe, as they prepare for the second semester examinations.”
