Yobe State Government has emerged as the best-performing state in the North-East region at the 2024 Primary Health Care (PHC) Leadership Challenge, receiving a $500,000 (estimated at N390 million) award in recognition of its transformative investments in healthcare.

Deputy Governor of the state, Hon. Idi Barde Gubana led the state’s delegation to receive the award at a gala night organised by the Nigerian Governors’ Forum at the Banquet Hall of Presidential Villa in Abuja.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the award underscores Governor Mai Mala Buni’s unwavering commitment to healthcare transformation, particularly at the primary level.

The recognition follows significant investments in public health infrastructure, service delivery, and strategic reforms aimed at enhancing health outcomes across the state.

The PHC Leadership Challenge is a collaborative initiative involving the Nigerian Governors Forum, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, UNICEF, Aliko Dangote Foundation, and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency.

However, state governors have further been encouraged to prioritise healthcare investments and strengthen service delivery.

Other top government that received the award alongside the deputy governor include the Commissioner of Health, Executive Secretary of the Primary Health Care Agency and the Executive Secretary of Contributory Healthcare Management Agency.

Governor Buni’s administration has continued to demonstrate innovations in public health, with the $500,000 prize earmarked to further enhance ongoing healthcare initiatives and ensuring improved access to quality care for Yobe residents.
