The Zamfara State government has paid N7.3bn gratuities to retired local government and state civil servants.

The Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Sulaiman Idris, made this known in a statement issued in Gusau, the state capital, on Thursday.

Idris said the state government instituted a committee in January to verify the unpaid gratuities of workers who retired between 2015 and 2024, as well as LG pensioners who retired between 2012 and 2019.

He said the government successfully paid a total of N7.3bn as gratuities to the former state civil servants in seven batches.

“The state government is committed to clearing the backlog of over N13bn gratuities owed to retired LG and state civil servants,” he said.

Idris said the former workers had experienced hardship over the years due to non-payment of their retirement benefits by the previous administrations in the state.

“Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration will continue to be committed to revamping Zamfara civil service for improved efficiency and effectiveness,” he said.
