Abuja-based Primal Sporting win N50m Lagos Liga

Abuja-based Primal Sporting FC carted home the N50m prize of the maiden Lagos Liga football tournament after beating Applebee FC 9-8 on penalties in a thrilling final at the Mobolaji Johsnson Arena on Friday.

Lagos Liga is a 7-aside non-professional football tournament that was  announced in May and featured 16 teams.

Primal Sporting trailed 1-0 for most part of the high-octane final and grabbed the equaliser which sent the game into extra-time few seconds to the end of regular time.

The Lagos Liga adopted the video assistant referee and there was a nerve-wracking moment in the final, as the VAR overturned a penalty appeal by Applebee to a free kick in extra-time.

Both sides converted their first eight kicks during the shootout, but it was Primal Sporting goalkeeper who made the difference with a save on the ninth kick of their opponents to win the game 9-8.

Most of the teams that featured in the maiden edition of the tournament were newly formed, including semi-finalists 30BG FC and Tacha FC, owned by Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido and Big Brother Naija Season 4 star Natacha Akide, also known as Tacha respectively.

To advance to the the final of the winner takes all tournament, Primal Sporting and Applebee FC eliminated 30BG FC and Tacha FC in the last four with a similar 3-0 thrashing.

The winners Primal Sporting was formed by tech expert Mahmud Ribadu while Applebee is owned by businessman Nnazilim Egbonu.

The final was wrapped up with a performance by Nigerian rapper, Remilekun Safaru, popularly known as Reminisce.
