Direct IG to implement court-ordered reinstament, disengaged cops beg Tinubu

Some recently disengaged police officers have urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and direct the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to comply with a National Industrial Court ruling ordering their reinstatement.

The affected officers, from Courses 33, 34, and 35 of the Nigeria Police Academy, allege they were forcibly retired despite not reaching the mandatory 35 years of service or the age of 60.

Challenging the action, they secured a favourable judgment in April 2022 from the National Industrial Court in Abuja.

However, the IGP, Police Service Commission, and the Secretary of the Police Force have yet to enforce the ruling.

In an open letter to the President, the officers’ legal representative, Olatoye Adejola, on Sunday lamented the continued disregard for the court order.

“The Industrial Court directed the IGP to re-engage our clients, yet no action has been taken,” the letter read.

The letter further revealed that in August 2024, the officers were summoned to Abuja for documentation, raising hopes of reinstatement. However, despite completing the process, they have received no communication from the police force.

“Our clients were optimistic when asked to report to Abuja between 12th and 16th August 2024 for further documentation. They anticipated receiving posting letters and the restoration of their salaries,” the letter continued.

“Over two months later, there has been silence. Our clients remain confused and dismayed, left in the dark about the next steps.”

The officers appealed to President Tinubu to ensure the IGP promptly regularised their appointments as mandated by the court.

They said, “Mr President, we plead with you to use your office to direct the IGP to expedite action on the regularisation of our clients’ appointments, as ordered by a competent court and with no appeal against the ruling.”
