The Federal Government has proposed a budget of N38,030,008,805 to feed inmates in the Nigerian custodial centres in 2025.

Also, N7.2bn was proposed for the upgrade of correctional facilities on the back of repeated jailbreaks in recent year.

These funds aim to upgrade deteriorating infrastructure and create a more conducive environment for inmates and staff.

Other allocations include N1,716,640,500 for uniforms and clothing; and N1,062,097,494 for medical supplies.

To enhance security, N1,231,334,077 has been allocated for the purchase of security equipment for officials. Additionally, N2,280,609,699 has been earmarked for the purchase of vehicles to improve logistics and security operations.

The budget also includes N563,390,773 for the ongoing construction of a 3,000-capacity maximum security prison in Abuja.

This project is part of the government’s long-term plan to modernise the prison system and increase capacity.

In addition, N6,161,868 has been allocated for the construction and provision of clinics in six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory, aimed at improving healthcare services for both inmates and correctional staff.

The 2025 budget was presented to the National Assembly last week by President Bola Tinubu for vetting and passage.
