- Another Kenyan, Emmacuolate Anyango Achol has been provisionally suspended for doping offences
- The Athletics Integrity Unit reached the decision after Achol was found to have used banned substances
- Achol was one of Kenya's promising stars, but her suspension is a massive setback to her career
Kenyan athlete Emmaculate Anyango Achol has been provisionally suspended for anti-doping rule violations.
Achol was one of Kenya's rising athletes. After finishing fourth at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in March, she was tipped for greater things.
Why has Achol been provisionally suspended?
According to the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), she was provisionally suspended for the use and presence of banned substances (Testosterone and EPO).
The new development means Achol will not participate in a competition or activity in athletics before a final decision is made about her case. Her suspension is temporary, pending a final ruling.
A doping case usually goes through five stages, but not all cases go through the entire process.
According to the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), erythropoietin (EPO) is used in blood doping. It increases red blood cell mass, allowing the body to transport more oxygen to muscles, improving stamina and performance.
Achola will now have to wait with bated breath for the final decision, which will determine her fate and career. She holds the second fastest 10km time in history among women athletes and could be banned for four years.
“I know people are starting to focus on me now, especially after the Valencia race where Agnes Chebet broke the world record, and I was second. It propelled me internationally,” she told Olympics.com.Nigerian boxr suspended after positive test
