The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has apprehended a 33-year-old man, Obinna Nwigwe, for allegedly shooting his friend, Andrew Philemon, during a heated argument at Najob Guest House, Bwari.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, describing it as a disturbing case of violent crime.
According to the statement, the altercation occurred last Thursday, prompting police officers to respond to a distress call about gunfire at the guest house.
“Upon arriving at the scene, officers found Andrew Philemon critically injured from a gunshot wound. Obinna Nwigwe, who was armed with a pump-action rifle, claimed he fired in self-defence as the argument escalated,” Adeh stated.
Subsequent investigations led to a search of Nwigwe’s residence, where officers discovered an alarming cache of weapons.
“The search uncovered five Dane guns, an English-made single-barrelled gun, an AK-47 magazine loaded with 29 rounds of 7.62 live ammunition, four live cartridges, 17 spent cartridges, a bow and arrows, various knives, a sword-stick, a toy gun, a taser, a bulletproof jacket, and multiple sets of police uniforms and boots,” Adeh revealed.
Philemon is currently receiving treatment at the National Hospital in Abuja, while Nwigwe remains in police custody as investigations continue.
The FCT Police Command reiterated its commitment to tackling violent crimes and emphasized the dangers of illegal firearm possession. “This case underscores the importance of vigilance and highlights the risks posed by unregulated weapon ownership. The suspect will face the full weight of the law,” Adeh said.
FCT Police Commissioner, Tunji Disu, also urged residents to collaborate with law enforcement to enhance security.
“The safety and security of our community rely on the active participation of all citizens. We urge everyone to report any suspicious activities to the police,” Disu stated.
