Why I Won’t Back PDP Guber Candidate In Ondo – Wike Reveals As He Tackles Obaseki, Bala Mohammed

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that he has not been approached to support the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Agboola Ajayi, in the upcoming Ondo State governorship election scheduled for next Saturday.

During a media briefing with selected journalists on Wednesday, Wike highlighted the need for proper consultation before committing his support, saying, “One doesn’t just rush into matters without being called upon. My party hasn’t reached out to ask for my support for their governorship candidate in Ondo.”

Reflecting on past instances, Wike recalled how the PDP formally approached him during the Bayelsa State election, which resulted in his support for the successful candidacy of Governor Douye Diri.

“I gave him full support; when I say support, I gave everything, and he won,” Wike shared.

In contrast, he recounted rejecting an invitation from former Governor Godwin Obaseki to support the PDP candidate in the recent Edo State election.

“I will not support Obaseki. They then told me if I wouldn’t support him, to remain silent, and I agreed to keep quiet,” he said.

Addressing his relationship with Ondo’s PDP candidate, Ajayi, Wike revealed he hadn’t had recent contact with him.

“I haven’t even seen him. The last time was when I backed him in his race against Eyitayo Jegede after he resigned as deputy governor under the late Rotimi Akeredolu,” Wike mentioned.

Expressing his disappointment with the PDP’s lack of communication on the Ondo election, Wike criticized the party’s current leadership.

“PDP has never faced such a poor state of leadership, especially from the chairman of the governors’ forum,” he remarked.

Naija News reports that Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, who is the leader of the PDP governors forum, has been at loggerheads with Wike over the running of the party.

Meanwhile, Wike underscored the need for dynamic leadership and effective mobilization to regain power in Ondo State, adding, “To be a leader, you must have the capacity to galvanize the people. As an opposition, you should demonstrate readiness to take over power.”
